Jacob Willcox has taken out the Rip Curl Pro Portugal Trials, at Supertubos, Peniche. JWillcox1

The young Australian surfer defeated Nic von Rupp, Marlon Lipke and Ruben González in the final heat. He will be surfing against Kelly Slater and Kolohe Andino, in the first round of the main event.

Willcox, who won the the ISA Under 16 world title, surfed the best wave of the Trials – a 9 point barrel ride – to secure the highly coveted wildcard.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese national surfing hero and ASP Top 34 surfer Tiago Pires officially withdrew from Peniche because of an ongoing knee injury. Pires will be replaced by reigning Portuguese national champion Frederico Morais.
