Congratulations to the thirty students from Margaret River Senior High School who competed in the annual Evatt Trophy debating competition. This is organised by UN Youth, a volunteer organisation that aims at educating and involving youth in decision-making, current affairs and the United Nations. Evatt is a Model United Nations Security Council diplomacy competition for students in Years 9-12. More than 2,000 students compete in Evatt each year. It intends to educate young people about Australia’s place in the world and empower them as active citizens by developing public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills.
I would like to thank the four members of UN Youth that coached our students throughout the day, UN Youth for organising this fantastic, educational event and the Augusta Margaret River shire for allowing access to the council chamber. Most of all I would like to thank the students for their interest, enthusiasm and willingness to give it a go.
