Students from Indonesia arrived in Margaret River last week to look around, make friends and pat some kangaroos.

The 11 students come from Margaret River Senior High School’s sister school, Santa Laurensia, and are the seventh group to be hosted here.

MRSHS principal Andrew Host said the visit was a major highlight of every year.

“It’s a fantastic cultural lesson for both visiting students and our students here,” he said.

On the students’ first day, they investigated the school’s resident owls and met teachers before a trip to the Sunflowers Animal Farm.

They will also go on an excursion to the Jewel Cave, Margaret River Chocolate Factory and Amaze’n, before departing on March 20.

Asked what they thought of Margaret River, the students replied with “clean, green, beautiful and cold”.

Some of the students had visited Perth or Sydney before but never a country town. They said they felt lucky to travel here and learn more about Australia.

“I want to pat a kangaroo,” student Sharon Tanuwijaya said.

MRSHS Indonesian teacher Angela McCoy said it was great to have Santa Laurensia and Margaret River Senior High School connected on such a level.

“We have a really good relationship with the principal,” she said.

“And a lot of support from host families. They play a big role.”

She thanked everyone that had hosted or helped the students.

MRSHS students also enjoy the opportunity to be hosted overseas.

So far, two local groups have been sent to Santa Laurensia with another possibly being planned for next year.
