The numerous successes and achievements by both students and staff of the Society and Environment faculty at Margaret River SHS have made us the envy of both public and private schools throughout the state. For example in four of the past six years no less than two staff members and two students have been selected to represent WA on the highly acclaimed annual Premiers ANZAC Tour to France, Belgium and Gallipoli. Most recently in 2011 Society and Environment a faculty staff member was one only two teachers selected from across the state to commemorate ANZAC Day in Greece and Crete.
In addition, since 1996 when Margaret River became a senior high school, Year 12 TEE classes from the faculty have achieved a Top 10 ranking of all Western Australian schools on five separate occasions, involving 3 different staff members – the latest being in 2010. Our lower school success is also well known and documented. In 2011 for example students won the regional finals and went on to the state finals of the United Nations Hammarskjöld Debating Trophy, others were selected to part of the Student CHOGM, over 25% of our students achieved a High Distinction, Distinction or Credit in the National History Competition, and late in 2011 the whole Year 9 cohort achieved excellent results in the compulsory state wide WAMSE Society & Environment tests with 40% of them in the top 20% of the state. Furthermore, one of our Year 10 students was selected to be part of the Sir Charles Court Leadership Program.
Not only is there over 100 years of teaching experience amongst the five members within the faculty but amongst these are also state teaching awards winners, Level 3 classroom teachers, Teacher Development Centre Consultants – responsible for providing curriculum and professional guidance to fellow year 8-10 Society & Environment and year 11/12 upper school teachers in both the metro and regional areas, published educational text and resource kit authors, presenters at numerous state, national and international educational conferences and recipients of educational fellowships to countries around the world.
The range of Society and Environment courses offered in years 8-12 are further enhanced by a diverse Enrichment program providing students with experiences and opportunities both on campus, around the region, the metropolitan area as well as interstate and overseas. The ongoing success of the Society and Environment faculty is due to a combination of the professionalism of its staff and the value and confidence that students have in the learning experiences and opportunities that are provided.
S&E/Humanities – graduates from Margaret River Senior High School have achieved great success both at university, and careers in the public and private sectors within Australia and overseas.
