On Friday, 20 May, 23 students of Margaret River SHS participated in the 2022 Margaret River Evatt Trophy Diplomatic debating round at the Augusta Margaret River Shire Council Chambers. The students worked in pairs and were allocated a member state of the United Nations Security Council. After a debating workshop, the students debated the prepared resolution about wildfire mitigation. After lunch, the delegates hotly discussed the impromptu resolution ‘The Question of Activities on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies’ in the chamber. It was the very first round of this year’s Australia-wide Evatt competition. The students and the United Nations Youth organisers were thoroughly excited about participating in this round, and all planned to be back next year. In July, the top two or three teams will join last year’s state finalists, Mia Helenius and Abbey Lentjes, and two other Upper School teams for the regional round in Busselton.
A massive thank-you goes to the team of UN Youth for offering this incredible extra-curricular learning opportunity to our students, the AMR Shire for continuously supporting student leadership programs and the students for their enthusiasm and positive energy.
