“A Walk Down Cloudstreet”
The Upper School Drama class will present an abridged version of the stage adaptation of Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet. Our performance is entitled “A Walk Down Cloudstreet”. The stage play was written by Justin Monjo and Nick Enright and has been described as “a huge, organic, metaphorical play, intensely moving funny and tragic” Australian.
Our production leaves out some sub plots to produce a two hour show which still weaves the key story of the two Australian families (The Lambs and The Pickles) together in a unified plot line. Follows these families from Margaret River and Geraldton to their shared home in Shenton Park. We have included the magical realism of the Aboriginal character (Black Man) who guides the key characters towards a sense of harmony and home.
The play spans two decades and gives our students insights into past Western Australian generations. It explores post war Perth with one character describing our capital as “the most isolated country town in the world trying to be a city” – it is such an important story for our state and one that our young people should be encouraged to discover.
We have approached the set with a sense of symbolism using a past school production (Directed by Ed lacy and Sara Willmott) for our inspiration. The cast consists of students from Years 11 and 12 (with a few eager and talented Year 9’s and 10’s supporting as extras). Students have rehearsed in and out of school times with many Thursday evenings and Sunday rehearsals to polish the show.
Special thanks to Gary Bennet for his work on our set and Party Hire and Preloved Goods for their support with props and costumes. Parents and Staff have worked along side students to give design elements some authenticity. Thanks to Ian Rooke for his work on lighting.
Tickets can be purchased from the front office of the school for $10.
Performances are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday the 9th,10th and 11th
of April at 7pm in the high school auditorium.
A light supper will be provided by catering students and staff.
